# Password

> Protect JetKVM's web interface with a password, sign in and out, change or remove it, and recover from a forgotten one.

The password protects JetKVM's web interface on your network. Without one, anyone on your network who knows JetKVM's IP address can control the computer it's connected to. **We recommend setting one.**

The password is only for local access. Through JetKVM Cloud, you sign in with your cloud account instead; see [JetKVM Cloud](https://jetkvm.com/docs/networking/jetkvm-cloud).

## Forgot your password

There's no way to recover the password itself. Instead, erase JetKVM's settings, which removes the password, and set JetKVM up again.

**This erases all settings**, including the cloud connection and network settings.

**JetKVM**

**With SSH set up.** If you added an SSH key in Developer Mode before you forgot the password, erase the settings from your computer:

**Windows**

1. Open the Start menu, type **PowerShell** and open **Windows PowerShell**.
2. Connect to JetKVM, with the IP address from its display:
```
ssh root@<jetkvm-ip-address>
```
3. If SSH asks whether you trust the device, type `yes` and press **Enter**. If you set a passphrase for your key, enter it.
4. Erase the settings and restart JetKVM:
```
rm /userdata/kvm_config.json && sync && reboot
```
5. Wait for the display to show the IP address again, then open it in your browser and set JetKVM up again.

**macOS**

1. Press **Command-Space**, type **Terminal** and press **Return**.
2. Connect to JetKVM, with the IP address from its display:
```
ssh root@<jetkvm-ip-address>
```
3. If SSH asks whether you trust the device, type `yes` and press **Enter**. If you set a passphrase for your key, enter it.
4. Erase the settings and restart JetKVM:
```
rm /userdata/kvm_config.json && sync && reboot
```
5. Wait for the display to show the IP address again, then open it in your browser and set JetKVM up again.

**Linux**

1. Open a terminal.
2. Connect to JetKVM, with the IP address from its display:
```
ssh root@<jetkvm-ip-address>
```
3. If SSH asks whether you trust the device, type `yes` and press **Enter**. If you set a passphrase for your key, enter it.
4. Erase the settings and restart JetKVM:
```
rm /userdata/kvm_config.json && sync && reboot
```
5. Wait for the display to show the IP address again, then open it in your browser and set JetKVM up again.

**Without SSH.** Reflash JetKVM with fresh firmware. It takes a few minutes and a computer:

* [Recovery](https://jetkvm.com/docs/advanced-usage/recovery#jetkvm)

**JetKVM Mini**

Erase the settings from the Mini's own display:

1. Use the two buttons next to the display: one moves down the menu and holding it selects, the other goes back.
2. Open **Settings**, then **Advanced**, then **Reset Configuration**.
3. Press and hold for 10 seconds. The Mini restarts with its settings erased.

## Set a password

The first time you open JetKVM, it asks for a password. Enter one and click **Secure Device**. If you clicked **Not Now**, set one later:

1. In the JetKVM web interface, open **Settings**, then **Access**.
2. Click **Enable Password**.
3. Enter a password twice and click **Secure Device**.

## Signing in and out

* **You stay signed in for 7 days** in the browser you signed in with.
* **One browser at a time.** Signing in from another browser or computer signs the previous one out.
* **To sign out**, open the menu at the top right and click **Log out**.
* **After 5 wrong passwords**, JetKVM blocks sign-ins from that computer for 15 minutes, and for up to an hour if it keeps happening.

Passwords and sessions are stored on JetKVM and never leave it.

## Change or remove it

1. Open **Settings**, then **Access**.
2. Click **Change Password** to set a new one, or **Disable Protection** to remove it.
3. Enter your current password to confirm.
